The Advocate Post: UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer urged Iran to avoid any military actions against Israel in a phone call with Iran’s new president, Masoud Pazashkian. Starmer highlighted the “serious risk of miscalculation” and stressed the importance of calm and careful consideration at this moment. This marked the first ever direct communication between a UK prime minister and an Iranian president since the March of 2021.

The conversation coincided with a joint statement by the UK, US, France, Italy, and Germany, calling on Iran to halt its threats against Israel. The leaders warned of significant regional security risks should Iran proceed with an attack and expressed support for Israel’s defense against Iranian aggression and attacks by Iran-backed groups.

Tensions in the Middle East have escalated following the recent assassinations of senior Hezbollah and Hamas leaders. In response, the US has deployed a guided missile submarine and accelerated the arrival of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to the region. The White House later expressed concerns that an attack by Iran or its proxies could occur in the coming days.
