Karachi: The federal cabinet authorised on Monday the nationwide deployment of the military forces to maintain security throughout the month of Muharram.
The authorities of Sindh, Balochistan, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir have requested the deployment of military forces to maintain peace and order in these regions.
The Centre allowed the “deployment of army troops/assets and civil armed forces troops/assets” in order to maintain peace, as stated in Article 245 of the Constitution.The Ministry of Interior has made it clear that the provinces will have the power to choose the sites for the army’s deployment, and that it will depend on the conditions on the ground.
Orders for the army’s deployment have been issued by the federal ministry of interior, with the stated goal of supporting the civil administration.
It is important to note that Pakistan will mark Ashura on Wednesday, July 17. The 10-day Muharram holiday in Sindh is prohibited from pillion riding by the provincial government.
