Taiwan–Somaliland Military Cooperation Deal Likely by Mid-2025

The Advocate Post: Taiwan and Somaliland are reportedly moving toward finalizing a landmark military cooperation agreement, with the signing expected as early as mid-2025. The deal marks a significant step forward in the growing partnership between two diplomatically isolated entities seeking to strengthen their defense and geopolitical standing.

According to diplomatic sources familiar with the matter, the proposed agreement would allow Somaliland to acquire Taiwanese military equipment, including naval vessels that have been phased out or upgraded by Taiwan’s own defense forces. In addition, multiple Somaliland officers have already undergone training programs in Taiwan, highlighting a quietly growing military rapport between the two sides.

Though thousands of kilometers apart, Taiwan and Somaliland share a unique bond in their pursuit of international legitimacy. Neither is recognized by the United Nations or a majority of world governments, yet both maintain functional democracies and assert de facto independence against strong opposition from China in Taiwan’s case, and from Somalia in Somaliland’s.

The emerging defense ties also reflect shifting dynamics in the Horn of Africa, where China’s strategic investments — including military bases, port projects, and telecommunications infrastructure — have raised concerns among Western allies. The Taiwan-Somaliland pact is widely seen as a symbolic and practical counterbalance to Beijing’s growing regional influence.

Security analysts suggest that the partnership gives Taiwan a rare diplomatic and strategic foothold in East Africa, while offering Somaliland access to advanced military technology and training that few other partners are willing to provide.

Neither Taipei nor Hargeisa has publicly confirmed the details of the agreement, and both governments declined to comment when contacted. However, regional observers expect the deal to be finalized and publicly announced by the summer of 2025.
