UN Security Council has condemned a recent drone attack by the Houthi rebels on Bahraini soldiers

In a decisive move, the UN Security Council has vehemently condemned a recent drone attack by the Houthi rebels on Bahraini soldiers serving within the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen. This egregious assault resulted in the tragic loss of three soldiers and numerous injuries, sending shockwaves through the region. The Security Council characterized this act as a grave menace to both the ongoing peace process and the stability of the entire region.

This drone strike, a significant escalation, unfolded along Saudi Arabia’s southern border with Yemen, disrupting a period of relative calm that had prevailed for over a year. The attack occurred just as momentum was building for peace negotiations in Yemen, with US envoy Tim Lenderking describing the situation as the “best chance for peace” since the conflict began.

The Security Council’s urgent call is for the immediate cessation of all terrorist activities by the Houthi rebels and the safeguarding of civilian infrastructure near the border. They also stressed the importance of adherence to international law and humanitarian principles by all parties involved.

Members underscored that any further escalation of hostilities would only amplify the suffering of the Yemeni population. They reiterated the pressing need for substantial steps toward a comprehensive ceasefire agreement, pledging unwavering support for endeavors aimed at achieving a political settlement to end the eight-year-long conflict. Additionally, the Security Council expressed strong backing for UN Special Envoy Hans Grundberg in his mission to facilitate a Yemeni-driven political resolution, consistent with relevant Security Council resolutions and agreed-upon references.
