Hargeisa: Abdul Rafay Afzal, an internationally recognized journalist, lawyer, global affairs and policy advisor, and Editor-in-Chief of The Advocate Post, held a high-level meeting with senior officials from the Ministry of Transport and Roads of Somaliland to discuss strategic collaboration on transport policy, road safety, and sustainable infrastructure development.
The meeting was attended by Ms. Ayaan, Advisor to the Ministry of Transport and Roads, and Mr. Abdi Jama, Senior Advisor at the same ministry. The discussions focused on strengthening institutional cooperation and developing long-term policy frameworks aimed at improving road safety and modernizing Somaliland’s transport infrastructure.
During the in-depth dialogue, participants exchanged views on current challenges facing the road transport sector, including traffic management, public safety, regulatory frameworks, and the growing demand for resilient and sustainable road networks. Emphasis was placed on aligning transport policies with international best practices while ensuring solutions are locally adaptable and inclusive.
Mr. Afzal highlighted the importance of evidence-based policymaking, legal reform, and public awareness in reducing road accidents and enhancing transport efficiency. He also underscored the role of media, policy advocacy, and cross-sector collaboration in driving meaningful reform and ensuring accountability in infrastructure development.
Ms. Ayaan and Mr. Abdi Jama shared insights into the Ministry’s ongoing initiatives and future vision, stressing the government’s commitment to safer roads, improved connectivity, and sustainable development. They welcomed constructive engagement with international experts and media professionals to support policy innovation and capacity building within the sector.
