Micronesia Establishes Diplomatic Ties with Pakistan at United Nations, Names Pakistan 100th Diplomatic Partner

New York/Islamabad — In a historic move, the Federated States of Micronesia and Pakistan officially established diplomatic relations at the United Nations on August 14, 2025. The ceremony took place at the Pakistan Mission to the UN in New York, marking Pakistan as Micronesia’s 100th diplomatic partner.

This milestone event further strengthens Micronesia’s global presence, with the Pacific island nation expanding its diplomatic footprint across Asia. The joint communiqué was signed by Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, and Ambassador Jeem S Lippwe of Micronesia.

“I am truly glad this partnership begins on Pakistan’s Independence Day,” said Ambassador Asim, adding that the new relationship would focus on climate change cooperation, human resource development, and capacity building, along with collaboration on international peace and security at the UN.

Micronesia-Pakistan Relations: A New Chapter in Global Diplomacy

Ambassador Jeem S Lippwe of Micronesia welcomed the formation of diplomatic relations, calling it “a journey of friendship and partnership.” He expressed gratitude to Pakistan for its support in helping Micronesia open UN offices and emphasized the potential for bilateral and multilateral collaboration.

Before the signing ceremony, both ambassadors held a brief meeting to explore areas of mutual interest, including cooperation on climate adaptation, oceans protection, and human development initiatives.

“This partnership reflects Micronesia’s continued commitment to addressing global challenges like rising sea levels and climate resilience,” said Ambassador Lippwe.

Why This Matters: Diplomatic and Environmental Impact

This new bilateral relationship is diplomatically symbolic but strategically important. It gives Pakistan a foothold in the Pacific Islands region—a key geopolitical area amid growing global interest. For Micronesia, it adds another strategic ally to amplify its priorities in climate policy, ocean governance, and small island states’ advocacy in multilateral forums like the United Nations.

The move is expected to pave the way for cooperation in:

  • Climate change mitigation

  • Human capital development

  • UN-based multilateral initiatives
