Eight Dead, 22 Missing After Smugglers Force Migrants to Swim to Shore Near Djibouti

Djibouti, 11 June 2025 At least eight refugees and migrants have died, and 22 others are missing after smugglers forced them off a boat near the coast of Djibouti, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The UN agency reported that the victims were part of a group of 150 people who were compelled to abandon their vessel and swim to shore on 5 June. Survivors were later found in the desert by IOM patrol teams and taken to a response center for assistance.

The IOM, alongside Djiboutian authorities, is conducting search-and-rescue operations to locate the missing individuals.

“Every life lost at sea is a tragedy that should never happen,”

said Frantz Celestin, IOM Regional Director for East, Horn, and Southern Africa.

“Those on the boat were forced into impossible choices by smugglers who show no regard for human life.”

Each year, thousands of refugees and migrants from Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia risk dangerous sea crossings in hopes of reaching Europe, fleeing conflict, persecution, or economic hardship. Smugglers exploit their desperation, often overcrowding unsafe boats and abandoning passengers mid-journey.

Many of these perilous routes traverse the Red Sea toward Gulf countries before attempts are made to continue onward to Europe. This latest incident highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis and the deadly risks faced by those seeking safety and opportunity.

Authorities have urged international action to combat human smuggling networks and prevent further loss of life.
