Somaliland and Kenya Discuss Parliamentary Cooperation and Regional Stability

Nairobi, Kenya – Somaliland President H.E. Abdirahman Mohamed Abdilahi Irro met with Kenya’s Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Moses Masika Wetangula, during his official visit to Kenya. The discussions centered on strengthening legislative ties, enhancing democratic processes, and promoting regional stability in the Horn of Africa.

Key Discussions

The two leaders explored ways to foster cooperation between their parliaments, including official exchanges, dialogue, and sharing expertise. They emphasized the importance of legislative collaboration in supporting government initiatives and strengthening bilateral relations.

President Irro expressed appreciation for Kenya’s recognition of Somaliland’s political and democratic progress. Meanwhile, Speaker Wetangula commended Somaliland’s achievements in maintaining stability, peace, and democracy.

Commitments Made

– Kenya’s National Assembly pledged to enhance working relations with Somaliland’s legislative bodies.
– Both sides agreed to share experiences on democratic governance, electoral reforms, and parliamentary functions.
– The leaders underscored the role of parliaments in diplomacy to deepen mutual understanding and cooperation.

Regional Stability

The meeting also addressed the importance of legislative bodies in promoting peace, security, and sustainable development in the Horn of Africa. Both leaders acknowledged the need for continued dialogue to address regional challenges.

While the discussions highlighted growing ties between Somaliland and Kenya, it is important to note that Somaliland’s international recognition remains limited. Kenya, like most nations, maintains official relations with the Federal Government of Somalia, which considers Somaliland a breakaway region.

The meeting reflects Somaliland’s ongoing efforts to strengthen international partnerships, though broader diplomatic recognition remains a complex and unresolved issue.
