Hargeisa, Somaliland

Q. Director General, thank you for your time. To begin, how would you describe the cultural identity of Somaliland?

DG Ilkacase: Somaliland’s culture is a vibrant tapestry woven from hospitality, peace, and creativity. Our people are renowned for their warmth and generosity, deeply rooted in our traditions. Dance and music are pillars of our heritage—whether during celebrations, ceremonies, or storytelling, they bind communities. Equally vital is our commitment to education and opportunity. We prioritize empowering youth through learning while preserving our nomadic roots and Islamic values. Ours is a culture where tradition and progress coexist harmoniously.

Q. Your ministry plays a critical role in shaping public discourse. What are its key responsibilities, and how do you personally contribute?

DG Ilkacase: The Ministry of Information and National Guidance serves as the bridge between the government and citizens. Our core duties include ensuring accurate information dissemination, promoting national unity, and safeguarding Somaliland’s narrative. We oversee media regulation, public awareness campaigns, and countering misinformation. My role involves steering these efforts strategically—fostering transparency, engaging with local and international media, and modernizing our communication tools, like digital platforms, to reach broader audiences. Collaboration with journalists and innovators is central to my mission.

Q: Connectivity is vital for growth. Are there plans to enhance Somaliland’s international links, such as direct flights?

DG Ilkacase: Absolutely. Improving global connectivity is a priority. I’m thrilled to share that we’re finalizing plans for direct flights between Nairobi and Hargeisa—a milestone for trade, tourism, and diaspora engagement. This route will strengthen ties with Kenya and beyond, positioning Somaliland as a hub in the Horn of Africa. We’re also in talks with other nations to expand direct air links, reflecting our openness to the world.

Q: This is the Waddani party’s first term leading the government. How does its vision shape your ministry’s goals?

DG Ilkacase: The Waddani-led government embodies progressiveness and ambition. Our vision is clear: to elevate Somaliland’s global standing through innovation, governance, and inclusivity. For my ministry, this means amplifying our story of resilience and democracy. We aim to leverage technology for citizen engagement, support independent media, and showcase Somaliland’s potential as a stable, investment-friendly nation. This administration is committed to making Somaliland great—recognized not just regionally, but globally.

Q: Any final message to our readers?

DG Ilkacase: To Somalilanders and the world: we are a nation of peace, opportunity, and unwavering resolve. Our doors are open—to investors, partners, and friends. With new flights, progressive policies, and a culture that celebrates unity, we stride confidently toward the future. Together, we will build a Somaliland that shines brighter than ever.
