The Advocate Post: Argentine prosecutors have opened an investigation into former President Alberto Fernández following allegations of severe physical abuse made by his ex-partner, former First Lady Fabiola Yáñez. Yáñez, 43, filed a complaint last week accusing Fernández, 65, of assaulting her during their relationship, which ended after his presidency in 2023. She testified from Spain, claiming she had endured psychological threats, physical violence, and was coerced into having an abortion. Fernándezdenies all charges and is prohibited from leaving the country during the investigation.
Prosecutor Ramiro González officially requested charges against the ex-president on Wednesday. The inquiry was prompted by leaked photos showing Yáñez with a black eye and bruises, which sparked public outrage in Argentina. Fernández dismissed the accusations, stating that Yáñez’s injuries were due to a “cosmetic treatment.” Under Argentine law, a judge will ultimately decide whether to press charges. Fernández, who entered politics in the early 1980s during the final years of Argentina’s military dictatorship, continues to refute the claims against him.
