The Advocate Post: Tens of thousands of women in West Bengal state marched through the streets on Wednesday night in protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata last week.
The violent death of the 31-year-old at the RG Kar Medical College last Friday served as the catalyst for nearly a week of frantic protests, which culminated in the Reclaim the Night march.
There was no designated rest place, so after a long 36-hour shift, she’d fallen asleep in a seminar room. Her coworkers found her partially nude and with multiple injuries on the podium the following morning. A volunteer at the hospital has been taken into custody in relation to the offense.
On a wet Wednesday night, women from all walks of life marched around Kolkata and the state in response to summons made on social media.
The majority of the protests were peaceful, however there were some violent incidents involving the police and a few unknown guys who broke into the RG Kar Hospital, where the doctor was killed, and looted the emergency room.
Tear gas was used by police to scatter the rowdy throng. Additionally, some police cars sustained damage.
Numerous other Indian cities, including Delhi, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Pune, also witnessed smaller-scale protests.
Women in Kolkata walked resolutely with protest placards in hand, their faces lit by torches, candles, and cell phone light. A few carried the flags of India. There were guys there, young and old alike.
They stood together, holding hands, during the marches and at many gatherings close to a university, theater, and bus stop. The muggy air was filled with the loud, insistent chanting, “wewant justice.” Conch shells were blown by protestors; the sound is lucky.
