FBI probes cyber theft claims of Trump campaign documents hacked by Iran

News Desk

The Advocate Post: An investigation has been launched by the FBI into claims from the Trump campaign that it was targeted by Iranian government hackers. A spokesperson from Trump’s campaign stated the documents were obtained illegally by “foreign sources hostile to the United States,” but Iranian officials have denied involvement, and the U.S. government has not yet put any accusations on Iran.

Reports also suggest that Iranian hackers may have targeted the Biden-Harris campaign, with Microsoft revealing that an unnamed U.S. presidential campaign was targeted by spear-phishing emails in June. The FBI began investigating after both campaigns experienced phishing attempts over the summer.

Although Trump downplayed the hack, claiming only publicly available information was accessed, the investigation continues. Democratic lawmakers are calling for transparency, urging the FBI to quickly disclose details of the hacking attempts. Congressman Adam Schiff emphasized the need for swift action, citing concerns over delays in identifying Russian interference in the 2016 election. Meanwhile, Congressman Eric Swalwell has requested a briefing from the Department of Homeland Security on the alleged hacking of Trump’s campaign. Despite political tensions, there is bipartisan agreement that foreign interference in U.S. elections is unacceptable.
