The Advocate Post: Bangladesh’s Chief Justice, Obaidul Hassan, resigned on Saturday following widespread protests led by students and other demonstrators. This development comes just days after Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus assumed leadership of the country’s interim government, following the resignation and flight of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to India.
Asif Nazrul, the law, justice, and parliamentary affairs adviser to the interim government, announced via a video message on Facebook that the chief justice’s resignation letter had been received and would be forwarded to President Mohammed Shahabuddin for further processing.
In addition to Hassan, five other top judges from the Supreme Court are expected to resign. This move is seen as part of the new government’s efforts to reorganize the judiciary.
Tensions escalated on Saturday morning when Chief Justice Hassan convened a meeting of High Court and Supreme Court judges to discuss the judiciary’s role under the new interim government. Protesters quickly gathered outside the court, demanding the immediate resignation of the chief justice and other top judges.
Asif Mahmud, a key student leader who was recently appointed as an adviser to the Ministry of Youth and Sports, urged his supporters to converge on the court premises to press for an unconditional resignation. Mahmud made this call in a Facebook post earlier in the day.
This significant reshuffling in Bangladesh’s judiciary marks a pivotal moment in the country’s political landscape, as the interim government begins its efforts to establish new governance structures following the departure of Sheikh Hasina.
