The Advocate Post: A heavy rainstorm caused a large tree to fall onto a vehicle at Cambodia’s historic Angkor temple complex, resulting in the death of one person and the injury of three others. The incident occurred late Tuesday at the southern gate of Angkor Thom, which is near the renowned Angkor Wat temple in Siem Reap province, approximately 200 miles northwest from Phnom Penh.
According to Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism, the popular tourist site attracted almost half a million international visitors in the first half of this year. The tree stuck a tuk-tuk, a three-wheeled motor vehicle popular in South and Southeast Asia, instantly killing the driver and injuring the three passengers, said the Siem Reap Provincial Administration.
The tree also claimed several statues on the balustrade of the Tonle Oum Gate as victims. The Apsara National Authority, in charge of managing the archeological park, posted photos of the fallen tree on its official Facebook page on Tuesday. It was later confirmed that the tree had been removed, and the entrance was reopened to visitors.
