Uganda’s President Yoweri Museveni gave a warning to the citizens planning to protest on Tuesday, saying that they are “playing with fire”.
The protests are coming after a series of devastating anti-government demonstrations by citizens in the unstable neighboring country of Kenya, the resulting clash with security forces claiming the lives of at least 50 people, according to data admitted by the National Commission on Human Rights.
Museveni, who has harshly ruled the East African country for nearly four decades, informed the public in a televised address that anti-corruption marches will not be permitted. He says that the people have no right to stir chaos while the government is in the middle of important operations like cheap food production.
Although the Ugandan Police force has warned against protesters and their “potentially anarchic” efforts, saying that they
“shall not tolerate disorderly conduct”,
young Ugandans on social media have said that are planning to continue on with the protests.
