NEPRA okays large per-unit hike in tariffs for domestic consumers

The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has approved a request from the federal government to increase the electricity base tariff by up to Rs7.12 per unit for domestic consumers who are facing high living costs.

Nepra’s 52-page decision, obtained by Geo News, approved tariff hikes for domestic, commercial, general services, bulk, and agricultural consumers. The decision allows for a uniform tariff across all power distribution companies (Discos) and K-Electric.

Under the new rates, domestic consumers will see their base tariff increase to Rs48.84 per unit. However, those using up to 200 units per month will be exempt from this hike for three months, starting from July to September 2024.

Consumers using 201 to 300 units per month will now pay Rs34.26 per unit, which is an increase of Rs7.12. Those consuming between 301 to 400 units will face a tariff of Rs39.15 per unit, up by Rs7.02, while users of 401-500 units will see aRs6.12 increase, bringing the rate to Rs41.36 per unit.

For those using 501 to 600 units, the new rate will be Rs42.78 per unit, an increase of Rs6.12. Consumers using 601 to 700 units will pay Rs43.92 per unit, also up by Rs6.12. Those consuming more than 700 units will be charged Rs48.84 per unit, reflecting an increase of Rs6.12. Additionally, per unit cost will rise according to the tax slabs.
