The Lebanese armed group Hezbollah has launched more than 200 rockets and attack drones into northern Israel, in response to the killing of one of its senior commanders. The barrage, which caused several fires, claimed the life of an Israeli military officer.
In retaliation, the military claimed to have hit Hezbollah “military structures” and other locations in southern Lebanon.
One person was reportedly killed in an Israeli drone strike in the village of Houla, according to Lebanese media.
The most recent assault, which came after one that included 100 rockets on Wednesday afternoon, was among the largest in the nine months of cross-border violence that have sparked concerns about a full-scale conflict.
Among the highest ranking members of the Hezbollah leadership to have perished in the fighting was Mohammed Nimah Nasser, who was killed in an Israeli airstrike close to Tyre, in southern Lebanon.
The Israeli military accused Nasser of overseeing a “large number of terror attacks” and stated that he was in charge of Hezbollah’s Aziz Unit, which launches rockets from southwest Lebanon.
The article also referred to him as “the counterpart” of TalebSami Abdullah, the head of a different group, whose assassination last month provoked Hezbollah to fire almost 200 missiles and rockets into northern Israel in one day.
