Abandoned truck containing 19 dead bodies found in Mexican state of Chiapas

In southern Mexican state of Chiapas, an abandoned truck containing at least 19 bodies was found on Monday, said the attorney general of the state.

According to authorities, five of the bodies had gunshots wounds, wore dark clothing, as well as tactical vests which contained ammunition. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obradorhas said the deaths were the result of cartel violence and informed that some of the victims were migrants from Guatemala.

Lopez Obrador said on Tuesday during his daily press conference that the cause might’ve been related to drug trafficking and the trafficking of migrants. He added that two cartels were fighting with each other and the people of the area were under protection. One local resident told CNN “It’s sad and I can’t say otherwise, it’s sad that the violence came all the way here”. Another said the that they had to grow up surrounded by a lot of violence in the state of Chiapas, but had to migrate and live somewhere else, only coming to this state to visit family.

President Lopez Obrador promised to launch a thorough investigation on the case and ordered the reinforcement of security in Chiapas.
