Plane forced to land in Brazil as turbulence injures 30 people

Flight makes emergency landing in Brazil after facing “strong turbulence”, leaving 30 injured. The plane, an Air Europa Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, was in trip from Madrid to Montevideo when the incident had occurred.

According to a tweet made by the Spanish company, this specific flight, called Flight UX045 was diverged from its path towards the Uruguayan capital, to airport of Natal in north-eastern Brazil. They added that the injured passengers were receiving attention as needed.

It came across turbulence over the Atlantic, when the plane, which had 325 passengers on board, had almost reached the Brazilian coast, according to an Air Europa spokesperson. Fortunately, the plane landed safely and ambulances swarmed the airport. Officials have said that some passengers were taken to a hospital upon needing urgent medical care. At the incident, a local medical team has reported a total of 30 people of varying nationalities were treated and a total of 10 people were taken to the hospital. These patients had suffered injuries ranging from cranial fractures and cuts to the face, as they had hit their heads in the turbulence.

Several weeks prior to this incident, a similar tragedy involving a Singapore Airlines flight facing extreme amounts of turbulence while flying over Myanmar had occurred which resulted in a dozen injuries and one death.
