The Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay a visit to Russia for the first time since the invasion of Ukraine – a visit that highlights the ever-growing relationship between the two nations, even considering New Delhi’s close ties with Washington. According to the state-owned Russian TASS news agency, Kremlin spokesperson Yuri Ushakov has said that preparations are being made and that the exact dates will be released soon.
He has said that they can confirm they are preparing for the visit by the Prime Minister of India, but they have yet to confirm the date because it is still being put to agreement. Currently, CNN has already contacted India’s Ministry of External Affairs for comment.
This trip will be his first to the country ever since 2019, and one month after a hefty election process that resulted in his narrow re-election. Modi had last met with President Vladimir Putin in 2022, on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in Uzbekistan. He told Putin that this modern era is “not of war”. Interestingly, Putin had visited New Delhi just a few months prior to his sudden invasion of Ukraine.
India’s relations with Russia dates back several decades to the Cold War, still standing strong despite constant Western sanctions on Moscow. It is important to also mention that New Delhi has also repeatedly abstained from votes which condemned Russia at the United Nations and was also uninvolved in public criticism of Moscow’s war in Ukraine. India is still heavily dependent on Kremlin for military equipment, which is completely crucial considering their shared Himalayan border with China, and they have also recently purchased discounted Russian crude oil, supporting Putin’s nation as it faces a major financial drawback from global isolation.
