News DeskGENAVA: The UN migration agency reported on Tuesday that more than 49 migrants died, and 140 others are missing after their boat capsized near the Yemen coast. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) stated that a ship carrying 260 migrants, including Somalis and Ethiopians, departed from Somalia. The incident happened on Monday close to Alghareef Point in Yemen’s Shabwah governorate. Among the deceased are 31 women and six children, as per IOM. Mohammedali Abunajela, an IOM spokesperson, emphasized the need for collective action to address pressing migration issues and ensure migrants’ safety along migration paths. IOM documented 1,860 migrant deaths and disappearances along the perilous route from East Africa and the Horn of Africa to Gulf countries since 2014, with nearly 500 deaths attributed to drowning. The organization highlighted this migration route as the most hazardous globally, often involving reliance on smugglers for the journey, exposing migrants to increased risks, including human trafficking, during the dangerous boat voyage to Yemen. The United Nations reported that around 97,000 migrants arrived in Yemen from the Horn of Africa last year.
