Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen was attacked on Friday in the capital city of Copenhagen by a
man who has since been taken into custody, her office told CNN in a statement.
A guy struck Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Friday night in Copenhagen’s Kultorvet, a public area.
The prime minister’s office reported that the individual was later taken into custody.
Frederiksen “is shocked by the incident,” it continued, with no other information provided. It’s unknown
if the attack caused any injuries to the prime minister.
After the attack, Danish Environment Minister Magnus Heunicke called for national solidarity, stating that
regardless of “political disagreements, election campaigns,” everyone has a responsibility to watch out
for each other.
He stated on X that “something like this must not happen in our beautiful, safe, and free country.” “This
is unattractive and disgusting. Let’s demonstrate how superior Denmark is. After the attack, European
lawmakers expressed shock.
As she denounced the attack, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen described it as
a “despicable act, which goes against everything we believe in and fight for in Europe.” She continued,
wishing the prime minister bravery and strength, adding that she has both in plenty.
Denmark is scheduled to cast a ballot in Sunday’s European Union elections. As prime minister since 2019,
Frederiksen is the head of the center-left Socialist Democratic party of Denmark.
Her attack occurred a few weeks after Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was shot and hurt in what
was the first significant attempt in almost 20 years to assassinate a political leader in Europe. At the time,
politicians and political observers noted that revealed a heated and divided political environment in
Slovakia as well as throughout Europe.
