Despite contributing less than 1% of the Global Carbon Footprint, South Asian nation of Pakistan stands 5th most climate vulnerable nation in the World

In August 2022, Pakistan faced a catastrophic disaster as torrential monsoon rains triggered devastating floods that impacted over 33 million people — a number almost equivalent to Canada’s population. As our teams on the ground swiftly responded, providing emergency aid to nearly a million affected Pakistanis, it became evident that the 2022 floods were not just an isolated event. These floods, exacerbated by human-induced climate change, shed light on the urgent need to address the climate crisis.

The 2022 floods were a grim reminder of the far-reaching effects of climate change in Pakistan. Despite contributing less than 1% to the global carbon footprint, Pakistan stands as the fifth most climate-vulnerable nation in the world, bearing witness to countless lives lost and economic losses amounting to 3.8 billion USD between 1999 and 2018, as per the Global Climate Risk Index.

Changing weather patterns, soaring temperatures, erratic monsoons, and the alarming melting of glaciers are just a glimpse of the climate-induced challenges Pakistan faces.
