why London Backs Sadiq Khan?

From cleaner air and improved transport to free school meals and greater social inclusion, Sadiq Khan’s decade of leadership has helped shape a changing London.

London is more than a global financial centre or a collection of historic landmarks. It is a city built upon diversity, ambition and opportunity. For many Londoners, Mayor Sadiq Khan represents these very qualities. His journey from a working-class family in South London to becoming one of the world’s most prominent city leaders is a remarkable story of determination and public service.

The son of Pakistani immigrants, whose father worked as a bus driver, Khan grew up in a council estate in Tooting. His upbringing gave him an understanding of the challenges facing ordinary families, from rising living costs to access to affordable housing and public transport.

First elected Mayor of London in 2016, Khan secured a historic third term in May 2024, receiving more than 1.08 million votes. His repeated electoral success demonstrates the strength of his political appeal in one of the world’s most diverse cities.

Making London More Accessible

One of Khan’s most significant achievements has been his commitment to improving public transport.

Under his mayoralty, London has witnessed the opening of the Elizabeth line, the introduction of the Superloop express bus network, expansion of cycling infrastructure and continued development of cleaner public transport.

His introduction of the Hopper fare, allowing passengers to make multiple bus and tram journeys within an hour for the price of one, has been particularly beneficial to commuters and lower-income households.

For a city where millions depend on public transport every day, these improvements have contributed to greater connectivity and accessibility.

Cleaner Air and a Greener Capital

Khan’s environmental policies have attracted international attention, particularly the expansion of London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ).

Although controversial among some motorists, the initiative has contributed to reducing harmful vehicle emissions and improving air quality.

According to research published in 2026, estimated deaths associated with air pollution in London declined by approximately 40% between 2019 and 2024, reflecting progress from a range of environmental measures.

Supporting Families and Children

Perhaps one of Khan’s most socially significant initiatives has been the introduction of universal free school meals for children attending London’s state-funded primary schools.

Introduced in September 2023, the programme has provided millions of nutritious meals while helping families manage increasing living expenses.

For parents struggling with inflation and household costs, such measures offer meaningful financial relief.

Khan’s administration has also supported youth programmes, homelessness initiatives and affordable housing development, although London’s housing shortage remains a serious challenge.

Diversity as London’s Greatest Strength

Beyond infrastructure and public services, Khan’s leadership carries considerable symbolic importance.

As London’s first Muslim mayor, and the son of immigrants, he represents the multicultural character of a city where people from different religions, nationalities and backgrounds contribute to a shared civic identity.

His rise demonstrates that political leadership need not be determined by family wealth, ethnicity or social privilege.

At a time when societies across the world are confronting division and intolerance, Khan has consistently advocated inclusion, coexistence and equal opportunity.

Leadership Beyond Political Differences

Of course, no mayor is beyond criticism. London continues to face serious problems involving housing affordability, crime, transport costs and economic inequality. Khan’s record on these issues remains contested, and his policies have not satisfied every resident.

Khan’s achievements in environmental protection, public transport, educational support and social inclusion provide substantial reasons why many Londoners continue to support him.

His political success reflects something important about modern London: a city that values diversity, recognises opportunity and expects its leaders to work towards improving everyday life.

Sadiq Khan’s enduring legacy may ultimately lie not merely in the infrastructure developed during his administration, but in his determination to make one of the world’s greatest cities more accessible, inclusive and equitable for the people who call it home.
