The Advocate Post: Tens of thousands of households across the Republic of Ireland and hundreds in Northern Ireland were left without power after severe thunderstorms. The storms, which featured thousands of lightning strikes, began late Sunday night and continued until about 7:00 AM on Monday, delivering one of the most remarkable lightning displays in recent years.
In the Republic of Ireland, around 36,000 properties lost power, while about 400 properties in Northern Ireland were also affected. NIE, the power provider for Northern Ireland, reported that most of the outages have been resolved, with remaining cases receiving necessary attention. ESB Network, which supplies energy in the Republic of Ireland, stated it is working to restore power and repair infrastructure, particularly in the midlands, west, northwest, and southwest regions. The company apologized for the inconvenience.
Weather warnings for rain and thunderstorms issued by the Met Office and Met Éireann have now expired. The thunderstorms coincided with warm overnight temperatures, with some parts of Northern Ireland not dropping below 18°C. Temperatures have been rising in recent days, with the current heatwave expected to peak today.
