Millions of Venezuelans are expected to vote on Sunday, July 28, in what is viewed as the most important election in Venezuela since Nicolás Maduro assumed power over a decade ago.
Maduro, known for his authoritarian rule marked by widespread poverty and mass emigration, faces opposition from Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, a grassroots candidate who gained popularity despite being the third choice after two other opposition leaders were disqualified from running.
Experts caution that the election outcome is likely to be disputed, pointing to Maduro’s history of clinging to power through allegations of electoral manipulation, including the widely condemned 2018 election.
