10 million Kenyan Shillings have been granted to the family of Pakistani journalist Arshad Sharif by the High Court in Kajiado, Kenya.
Sharif was shot and murdered by Kenyan police in October 2022, “mistakenly.” Senior journalist and former ARY News presenter Arshad Sharif was shot and killed in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, on October 23, the day he went into self-exile. The police later issued an official statement expressing “regrets on the unfortunate incident.”
Justice Stella Mutuku declared in her decision today that it was illegal and unconstitutional to use deadly force against Arshad Sharif by shooting him in the head. Through her attorney, Advocate Dudley Ochiel, Javeria Siddique, the wife of Arshad Sharif, asked the court to compel the Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, the Inspector General of Police, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority, and the National Police Service Commission—collectively, the respondents—to furnish her with copies of all records, evidence, pictures, videos, and documents pertaining to Sharif’s shooting.
“By shooting the deceased in the circumstances described in this case and which shooting has been admitted save for allegation that it was mistaken identity, the respondents violated the rights of the deceased,”
the judgement stated in an order.
