France’s electoral results tilt towards the Far Right, as they celebrate and seek majority in assembly

After the first round of parliamentary elections which showed the far right’s superiority over the votes, they stand in a domineering position, assuming power. Supporters cheered as Marine Le Pen, pioneer of the anti-immigration National Rally (RN), declared that the president’s “Macronist bloc has been all but wiped out”. RN stood at a winning 33.2% of the vote, with a left-wing alliance and the Macron alliance falling behind at 28.1% and 21%, respectively.

The 28 year old leader of the RN party, Jordan Bardella, has said that the he will be “prime minister for all the French People, if the French give us their votes,” This is the first time the far right has won the first round of any French parliamentary election. The chances of this event even happening was heralded as historic by veteran commentator Alain Duhamel.

Marine Le Pen and Jordan Bardella’s wish is to have absolute majority by occupying 289 seats in the 577 seat National Assembly. Next Sunday’s second round run-off votes and their seat projections indicate they would otherwise fall short in actuality.
