Israel’s National Security Minister Procures 10,000 Rifles for Civilian Security Teams

National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir has revealed that his ministry is acquiring 10,000 rifles to arm civilian security teams in various regions. This initiative aims to provide security to towns near Israel’s borders, mixed Jewish-Arab cities, and West Bank settlements. Ben Gvir, the leader of the far-right Otzma Yehudit party, has already acquired 4,000 assault rifles and plans to distribute them immediately. Additionally, helmets and bulletproof vests have been procured to accompany the assault rifles.

This decision comes in response to reports from some civilian security teams that they were ill-equipped to defend against recent attacks by Hamas. The arms and equipment will be distributed to hundreds of towns, including those with civilian security teams made up of both volunteers and civilians.

Furthermore, the plan includes establishing new civilian security teams in areas that currently lack such protection. The move aims to ensure the security of these communities and prevent a repeat of past unrest, referencing the 2021 conflict with Hamas that witnessed violence in mixed Jewish-Arab cities in Israel. The civilian security teams played a crucial role in providing security to towns and settlements during times of crisis.
