22nd September 1980: The Outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War

On this day, 22nd September 1980: The Outbreak of the Iran-Iraq War

Today, we turn the dial of the time machine back to the 22nd of September in 1980, a monumental day in history that triggered one of the most intensive and protracted international armed conflicts of the 20th century: The Iran-Iraq War

Years of escalating tensions, instigated by longstanding territorial disputes and heightened by the political chaos following Iran’s revolution in 1979, culminated in a decisive armed conflict. The opportunity to leverage this political turmoil and settle the border disputes once and for all was a temptation too strong to resist for Iraq.

The Iran-Iraq war began on September 22, 1980, marked by a full-scale invasion of western Iran by Iraqi forces along the joint border. With a surprise military attack, Iraq targeted crucial Iranian airbases and military installations. It was a strategic move initiated by Sad-dam Hussein, Iraq’s President at the time.
